Discord will use fewer PC resources while gaming

Discord said it will begin rolling out an experimental Game Mode next week that is designed to reduce the app’s CPU and GPU usage while a game is running.

Screenshots of the setting circulated on social media over the weekend. The toggle description says Game Mode will “Reduce Discord’s CPU and GPU usage while a game is running.”

Discord said on X that the mode is intended to free up system resources and that it is “aiming to add more resource-saving features over time.”

The company said the lighter mode should help other software running at the same time operate more smoothly during gameplay.

Discord is built on the Electron web app framework, which uses JavaScript and Chromium to create desktop software. Chromium, the open-source project that underpins Google’s Chrome browser and others, is generally seen as less efficient than native software approaches, which may limit how much Discord can reduce resource use on its current architecture.
