Google will continue supporting ChromeOS with updates and security patches until mid-2034 as it shifts its laptops to the new Android-based Googlebook OS.
A Google support page for enterprise and education users says ChromeOS will keep receiving updates through mid-2034. It was not clear whether the same timeline applies to the consumer version of ChromeOS.
Google has also said Chromebooks will receive 10 years of support. The support page says qualifying devices bought now, whose 10-year support life extends beyond 2034, will be supported in a transition to Googlebook OS, and many devices will offer direct migration paths.
A separate note says many of Google’s newest Chromebook devices will be eligible to transition to Googlebook OS. Google said it will share more details on the transition later.
The company plans to roll out the first Googlebook OS device management features for enterprise and education users in the second half of 2027.
Google announced Googlebooks around the time of its I/O developer conference earlier this year. It opened pre-orders for the new laptop models last week, and the first Googlebooks are due to arrive on October 4.
