GTA 6 extended look reveals gameplay and six-star Wanted system

Rockstar Games released a 26-minute “Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look” presentation ahead of the game’s November 19 launch, showing new gameplay systems, mission structure and expanded open-world activities.

The presentation premiered on Netflix, and Rockstar said viewers without Netflix could watch it on the company’s YouTube channel at 9 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. PDT, 2 a.m. BST and 3 a.m. CEST.

The footage focused on protagonists Jason and Lucia and showed gameplay shifting directly into cutscenes and back again during missions. One sequence showed Jason guiding Lucia through an apartment block to collect a package, while another cut between a police chase, shooting from a vehicle and cinematic transitions.

The presentation also showed character switching between Jason and Lucia during active missions. A later sequence moved from Jason texting Lucia in a cutscene to player control of Lucia.

Combat footage showed quick time events during close-range fights. In one scene, Lucia is given two on-screen input options before striking an opponent with her heel.

Jason was also shown using a focus meter that slows combat. Enemies appeared with red and yellow highlighted body zones during the sequence.

Rockstar’s footage indicated disguises will be part of some missions. Jason and Lucia were shown taking on different identities, with outfit changes and multiple hairstyles for Lucia.

The presentation confirmed a six-star wanted system in “GTA 6,” up from the five-star system used in “GTA 5.” Police chase scenes also showed players shooting out pursuing vehicles’ tires, causing crashes.

Weapon handling appeared to be more streamlined, with Jason and Lucia able to use their own loadouts and pick up weapons from downed enemies during combat. The footage also showed the return of the equipped weapon icon seen in “GTA 4,” displayed near the wanted level and ammunition count.

The user interface was shown in a simplified layout with fast access to the weapon wheel and rapid switching between the two protagonists. The presentation showed switching from Lucia to Jason within seconds on a base PlayStation 5.

Open-world activities shown in the footage included car and bike racing on a racetrack, fanboats, jet skis and canoes, base jumping from skyscrapers with a parachute, and both standard diving and scuba diving.

The footage also suggested Jason and Lucia will take jobs from multiple clients, including robberies, protection work and deliveries. One brief interaction also showed that players can pet a dog.
