Ubisoft apologizes after selling Heroes 3 on Steam without files

Ubisoft said it has fixed a Steam release error that briefly sold Heroes of Might and Magic III without the actual game files.

The company apologized in a Steam community post after the digital release of the 1999 strategy game and its three expansions went live in the wrong package.

“First, we’d like to apologize: we mistakenly released the wrong package yesterday,” Ubisoft said. “We’re very sorry for the mistake. The issue has now been resolved.”

The original download for the $10 game was only 23.4 kilobytes and showed an error message when users tried to run it, PC Gamer reported.

The failed launch triggered a wave of negative user reviews for the game on Steam.

The updated download now runs properly, Engadget said after testing the revised package.

Ubisoft released the classic version as a promotion for Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake, which it plans to launch in 2027.

The remake is described by Ubisoft as a modern reimagining that will expand the game from PC to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with updated visuals, easier access to user-generated content and enhanced planning and decision-making tools.
