Netflix adds Codenames Party to its games lineup

Netflix has added Codenames Party to its Netflix Games lineup, expanding its catalog of family and party titles with a mobile-based word association game.

Players join by scanning a QR code and use their phones to play, with no extra hardware or controllers required. The game is based on Codenames, which began as a tabletop title and later moved online for virtual play.

The Netflix version includes the classic team mode, in which two teams play with a rotating Spymaster who gives clues to help teammates identify target words.

It also includes a mode called Case Studies, where all players guess from pre-made word and clue sets instead of using their own spymasters.

Netflix has added a new Party Mode that removes teams and shifts play to individuals. In Party Mode, each player creates a single clue linked to their own set of eight words from a shared pool of 16 options.

Players score points by correctly guessing words from other players’ sets and by having their own code words identified by the group.

Netflix has been building its roster of family-friendly and party games over the past year and a half.
