Meta enters AI coding race with Muse Code beta

Meta has launched an early beta of Muse Code, a terminal-based coding agent powered by its new Muse Spark 1.2 model. The company said Muse Spark 1.2 improves code generation, complex debugging, codebase understanding and end-to-end developer workflows.

Muse Code is designed to compete with Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex. It can write code, plan changes and validate results from text prompts. Meta said the tool can also manage multiple sub-agents and delegate tasks to complete work more efficiently.

Meta is positioning price as a key point of differentiation. The company said Muse Code uses the same pay-as-you-go pricing as Muse Spark by default, at $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens.

In an interview with CNBC, Meta Chief AI Officer Alexander Wang said the company would also offer “a contributor tier that gets you in at a significantly lower cost.”

That tier would require users to agree to provide feedback to improve the coding agent, The Wall Street Journal reported. It would cost $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.20 per million output tokens.

Those rates are below Anthropic’s Sonnet 5 pricing of $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.
