Netspeak vs. Leetspeak
Words such as LOL (meaning laugh out loud), LMAO, and LMFAO make up what is called netspeak, also sometimes called chatspeak. A large number of people on sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter use these acronyms and abbreviations. However, many were used before these websites even existed.

Netspeak is also related to leetspeak, a language developed by hackers which allowed them to slip past email filters. Leetspeak works by substituting letters with numbers or different letters that are similar in appearance. For example, the letter E would be replaced with the number 3. Spelling may also be slightly altered in some words. In fact, the term leet in the very name of the language is often written as 1337. Leetspeak became popular and is no longer used solely by hackers. While it did gain popularity, it still isn’t a huge part of social networking sites like Facebook. It is mostly used by online gamers, programmers (most hackers are programmers), and forum posters.

Snapchat.com.ng A Text Guide to Snapchat for People Who Don’t Get Snapchat ! No images !

 

Snapchat is fun, and millions use it to stay in touch and share their lives with one another every day. It has an unearned reputation for being difficult to use, but it’s not, after you get the basics. Once you’re in and have a few friends to share with, it’s easy. If you don’t have anyone to show you, you don’t get it, or you’re just wondering what the fuss is about, let us help.

Let’s approach this from an angle you may already be familiar with: A slide show. We know, slide shows are boring. Stick with us, this one’s worth it.

There are plenty of reasons to use Snapchat — sharing with friends and disappearing messages and video for starters. These are the reasons I use Snapchat, I can’t speak for you. But I will say there are a lot of dogs, and they’re very adorable.

Speaking of “that filter that makes you pretty,” here are some examples. You can try them both, but the important thing to remember is that they’re each lovely. If you’re a purist, feel free to go without, of course.

Before we get too deep into specific features and filters, let’s take a look at Snapchat’s home screen: You know, the first thing you see when you open the app. Here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll see, and what everything does.

One thing about Snapchat people both love and hate is that it’s not terribly obvious what any of those buttons do. I’m sure someone, somewhere will judge you if you forget what the three-dot-thing in the bottom left is, but we won’t. And remember, even if you do forget, just tap it and you’ll see what it does. It won’t hurt.

If you swipe right on the main screen, you’ll see your friends page. This is where messages, stories, and other snaps live. For most people — especially beginners — this screen will be empty, save for a courtesy message from the Snapchat staff designed to make you feel less lonely (and also as a way to promote updates and new features).

You may not know it, but the colors actually do mean something — they’re designed to clue you in to what type of message you’ve received before you open it. Nothing more embarrassing than tapping a new message in a quiet room thinking it’s a photo only to have a video to autoplay at max volume, right? Now that’ll never be you.

Also, did you know that Snapchat automatically lets you know when someone’s read your message? It’s true, and they don’t have a choice in the matter. Just keep an eye on the arrow next to their name.

O.K., so that’s your inbox, but the stories and messages screen is where you’ll find the action (public, anyway). It’s where everyone you follow on Snapchat posts their public stories, where all of your messages, both group and direct, live, and everything that’s available for anyone to view for 24 hours.

You can also use this view to review the snaps you have made publicly available to everyone who follows you. Perfect for checking out how many people have viewed your posts, make sure you’re going mega-viral, or to delete that drunk snap you meant to keep private but posted to the world.

You can even drill down and see specifically who has viewed your snaps. That’s right — your followers can’t hide from you. If they do the creepy thing and try to take a screenshot, you’ll see that too, along with who it is so you can call them out accordingly.

O.K., so that’s the tour. Ready to take some snaps?

Like the camera app on your phone, you press the circle at the bottom of the screen to take a picture. To take a video, hold it down. Snapchat defaults to the front-facing camera here, so don’t be surprised if you’re looking at your own face when you get to this screen. You’ve been warned!

Once you have your photo or video ready, you can add some text or one of those cool bar captions, or you can even jazz it up by making the text colorful. Try it out, and play with it. You can always remove it and start over or just post it without any of that nonsense.

If you really want to personalize it, you can add emoji or stickers, draw directly on the image, duplicate images — whatever you want. Be warned though, go crazy and have fun, but there are diminishing returns: You probably don’t want to add too much at once.

Oh, you can also add filters to your photos — you didn’t forget that Snapchat has photo filters, did you? Swipe left or right to try them out. If you want to try out Snapchat’s face filters, keep the camera on your face and tap on it. You have to use the front-facing camera to get them though. You’ve seen these before, we’re willing to bet — you can make yourself look like a dog, a cat or a fox; you can squish your face down flat — the works. Some of the face filters even tweak your voice when you take a video!

When you’re all done, tap that blue arrow to send your finished snap to the world.

When you do tap that blue arrow, this is what you’ll see. You have the choice to post your snap to “my story,” which means “everyone who follows me publicly,” or to specific Snapchat friends or groups you’re a part of. Choose wisely!

Speaking of which, you can create groups of friends for semiprivate snap conversations. Think of them like group texts, just with all the other benefits of Snapchat videos and photos. Plus, it’s a great way to share with people you want seeing something you snap, but not the whole world at large.

There’s still a lot under the hood here, but these are the basics when it comes to using Snapchat effectively — or understanding how other people use it. Give it a try yourself. Despite being difficult to get into, once you’ve used it a few times to share with the world (or with your friends), you’ll get why it’s so popular, and you may even fall in love with it. Just remember, because it’s gone in 24 hours doesn’t mean it never happened, and always think before you snap — especially to the public.

As the competition for the presidential ticket of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party gets stiffer in the run-up to the 2019 general elections, the party has said that it will rely on Nigerians to help the party choose its candidate for the presidential election.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, in an exclusive interview with Saturday PUNCH on Friday, said the party had heard that many people, including a former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki; Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal; his colleague in Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo; and a former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, were interested in picking its presidential ticket.

 

He, however, said the decision to rely on Nigerians was premised on the party’s determination to avoid past mistakes, impunity and imposition of candidates.

According to Ologbondiyan, the party is not backing any of those in line to get its presidential ticket. Others interested in getting the party’s presidential tickets are a former Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau; former governors of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido and Ibrahim Turaki; and a former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa.

He said, “As a party, we have so many candidates already, but Nigerians will determine their next president.

EPP Status Codes | What Do They Mean, and Why Should I Know?

Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) domain status codes, also called domain name status codes, indicate the status of a domain name registration. Every domain has at least one status code, but they can also have more than one.

Is your domain name registration about to be dropped? Is it safely locked to prevent unauthorized transfers, updates or deletions? Does it have any restrictions or pending actions that you need to address? Finding and understanding your domain’s EPP status codes will answer all of these questions and more.

It is important for registrants (that means you!) to understand EPP status codes because they can explain why your domain may have stopped working, if it is protected from domain name hijacking, and when and if your domain name registration will expire and become available to the public for registration.

You can find out your domain’s status codes by running a Whois lookup, which you can do by visiting http://www.internic.net/whois.html or your registrar’s website. Your domain’s EPP status codes will be included in the search results.

There are two different types of EPP status codes: client and server codes. Client status codes are set by registrars. Some registrars automatically enact certain status codes when you register a domain name, while others do so when you request it. Server status codes are set by registries, and they take precedence over client codes. Both kinds of status codes appear when you run a Whois lookup for your domain.

The following are two tables containing the 17 standardized EPP (see std69) domain status codes plus the Registry Grace Period (RGP) status codes (see RFC3915). The first table lists the server and RGP status codes; the second table lists the client status codes. These tables will explain what each status means, why you should care what it means, and what kind of action you might want to take to respond to a status.

Server Status Codes are Set by Your Domain’s Registry

Status Code What does it mean? Should you do something?
addPeriod This grace period is provided after the initial registration of a domain name. If the registrar deletes the domain name during this period, the registry may provide credit to the registrar for the cost of the registration. This is an informative status set for the first several days of your domain’s registration. There is no issue with your domain name.
autoRenewPeriod This grace period is provided after a domain name registration period expires and is extended (renewed) automatically by the registry. If the registrar deletes the domain name during this period, the registry provides a credit to the registrar for the cost of the renewal. This is an informative status set for a limited time after your domain’s auto- renewal by the registry. If you do not want to keep it (i.e., pay the renewal fee) anymore, you should contact your registrar immediately to discuss what options are available.
inactive This status code indicates that delegation information (name servers) has not been associated with your domain. Your domain is not activated in the DNS and will not resolve. If your domain has remained in this status for several days, you may want to contact your registrar to request information about the delay in processing.

If the TLD requires documentation to be provided for registration, you may need to provide the required documentation.

ok This is the standard status for a domain, meaning it has no pending operations or prohibitions. Asking your registrar to enact status restrictions, like clientTransferProhibited, clientDeleteProhibited, and clientUpdateProhibited, can help to prevent unauthorized transfers, deletions, or updates to your domain.
pendingCreate This status code indicates that a request to create your domain has been received and is being processed. If the TLD is on a special registration period (e.g. sunrise), this may indicate that the domain name will be allocated at the end of such period.

If the TLD is not on a special registration period and you are NOT the listed Registrant, you should contact your registrar immediately to resolve the issue.

pendingDelete This status code may be mixed with redemptionPeriod or pendingRestore. In such case, depending on the status (i.e. redemptionPeriod or pendingRestore) set in the domain name, the corresponding description presented above applies. If this status is not combined with the redemptionPeriod or pendingRestore status, the pendingDelete status code indicates that your domain has been in redemptionPeriod status for 30 days and you have not restored it within that 30-day period. Your domain will remain in this status for several days, after which time your domain will be purged and dropped from the registry database.

Once deletion occurs, the domain is available for re-registration in accordance with the registry’s policies.

If you want to keep your domain name, you must immediately contact your registrar to discuss what options are available.
pendingRenew This status code indicates that a request to renew your domain has been received and is being processed. If you did not request to renew your domain and do not want to keep it (i.e., pay the renewal fee) anymore, you should contact your registrar immediately to discuss what options are available.
pendingRestore This status code indicates that your registrar has asked the registry to restore your domain that was in redemptionPeriod status. Your registry will hold the domain in this status while waiting for your registrar to provide required restoration documentation. If your registrar fails to provide documentation to the registry operator within a set time period to confirm the restoration request, the domain will revert to redemptionPeriod status. Watch your domain’s status codes within this frequently defined seven day period to ensure that your registrar has submitted the correct restoration documentation within the time window. If this period ended and your domain has reverted back to a redemptionPeriod status, contact your registrar to resolve whatever issues that may have halted the delivery of your domain’s required restoration documentation.
pendingTransfer This status code indicates that a request to transfer your domain to a new registrar has been received and is being processed. If you did not request to transfer your domain, you should contact your registrar immediately to request that they deny the transfer request on your behalf.
pendingUpdate This status code indicates that a request to update your domain has been received and is being processed. If you did not request to update your domain, you should contact your registrar immediately to resolve the issue.
redemptionPeriod This status code indicates that your registrar has asked the registry to delete your domain. Your domain will be held in this status for 30 days. After five calendar days following the end of the redemptionPeriod, your domain is purged from the registry database and becomes available for registration. If you want to keep your domain, you must immediately contact your registrar to resolve whatever issues resulted in your registrar requesting that your domain be deleted, which resulted in the redemptionPeriod status for your domain. Once any outstanding issues are resolved and the appropriate fee has been paid, your registrar should restore the domain on your behalf.
renewPeriod This grace period is provided after a domain name registration period is explicitly extended (renewed) by the registrar. If the registrar deletes the domain name during this period, the registry provides a credit to the registrar for the cost of the renewal. This is an informative status set for a limited period or your domain’s renewal by your registrar. If you did not request to renew your domain and do not want to keep it (i.e., pay the renewal fee) anymore, you should contact your registrar immediately to discuss what options are available.
serverDeleteProhibited This status code prevents your domain from being deleted. It is an uncommon status that is usually enacted during legal disputes, at your request, or when a redemptionPeriod status is in place. This status may indicate an issue with your domain that needs resolution. If so, you should contact your registrar to request more information and to resolve the issue. If your domain does not have any issues, and you simply want to delete it, you must first contact your registrar and request that they work with the Registry Operator to remove this status code.

It is an uncommon status that is usually enacted during legal disputes, non-payment, or when your domain is subject to deletion. Facebook Ad Costs

Facebook is outrageously popular for businesses, even in the wake of bad pressabout how it handles your data. Much like the auction for Google ads, there’s a bidding process to determine where your Facebook ad appears and how much you pay per click. You’ll indicate how much you want to hand over for precise actions on any given ad, such as views, conversions, clicks, etc. You can manually adjust it or have Facebook automatically make calculations for you, based on your specifications.

Various factors can affect your Facebook ad costs, including the following:

  • When your ad campaigns run (time, date, during peak hours when competition is fiercest)
  • Your specific audience
  • Your Relevance Score
  • Ad placement
  • Your bidding method (set a bid limit on every unique bid or just set your average bid)

As you can probably guess, ad costs therefore can vary quite a bit.

Still, if we look at the averages, we can see some interesting information.

WordStream analyzed hundreds of client accounts to calculate the average cost per click (CPC) and cost per action (CPA) on Facebook for eighteen different industries. They found that the average across all business types was $1.72 per click and $18.68 per conversion.

Looking at ad costs on the platform helps you get a sense of how much of your budget Facebook marketing will eat up. There are, of course, always ways to adjust your targeting and other strategies to lower your Facebook ad costs.

Now it’s time to delve into ad targeting. Here’s where you identify your audience and ensure that the ad content you serve up to them actually appeals to them.

How well you’re able to identify your audience will have a meaningful impact on how much you spend on ads, your ROI, and their overall effectiveness. It pays to spend extra time to accurately define whom you’re targeting.

Facebook lets you go pretty deeply into the traits that define your audience. The extensive targeting options include (but are by no means limited to):

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Location
  • Language
  • Interests
  • Behaviors
  • Life events (such as “recently married”)

These demographic qualities help you narrow down who will see your ads.

Criminalisation of Cybersquatting in Nigeria

Cybersquatting Under the Nigerian Law

Introduction
As aptly noted by W. Cornish & D. Llewellyn, in their book, Intellectual Property: Patents, Copyright, Trademarks and Allied Rights, Sixth Edition, Sweet & Maxwell, London, p.862:

“As E-commerce has grown, the internet has become a virtual space in which unfair trading with marks, brands and business names is likely to take place. To some extent, the structure of the system causes old dangers of public confusion to appear in new forms.”

At this point, it is apt to note the system for domain name registration, which generally operates on a first – come first-serve basis, and allows anybody who is entitled, to register a domain name without proof of the intended commercial use. This has unarguably been a thorn in the flesh of various individuals and corporate bodies, who own established trademarks and often seek ways to protect their trademarks in the era of the internet. Notably, it is no news that the advent of the internet marked the herald of cyber-linked issues such as cybersquatting, cyber piracy and the most damaging of all, trademark infringement.

In Nigeria, prior to the enactment of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act 2015 (the Act), cybersquatting could only be curbed arguably within the law of trademarks or the tort of passing off, which proved inadequate for this rampant illicit act. However, with the recent enactment of the Act, came into existence a legal framework, governing various aspects of online activities, including criminalizing the act of cybersquatting.

It is in this wise that this newsletter will consider the modern phenomenon of cybersquatting in the context of trademark infringement through the registration of domain names of registered marks.

Cybersquatting
The Act defines cybersquatting as; “the acquisition of a domain name over the internet in bad faith to profit, mislead, destroy reputation, and deprive others from registering the same, if such a domain name is; (i) similar, identical, or confusingly similar to an existing trademark registered with the appropriate government agency at the time of the domain name registration; (ii) identical, or in any way similar with the name of a person other than the registrant, in case of a personal name; and (iii) acquired without right or with intellectual property interests in it.

Trademark
In Section 67 of the Nigerian Trade Marks Act ( TMA), a “trademark” is defined to mean

“a mark used or proposed to be used in relation to goods for the purpose of indicating, or so as to indicate, a connection in the course of trade between the goods or services and some person having the right either as proprietor or as registered user to use the mark, whether with or without any indication of the identity of that person, and means, in relation to a certification trade mark, a mark registered or deemed to have been registered under section 431 of this Act.”

Domain Names as a Mark under the Trade Mark Act, While the definition of trademark as contained in section 67 of the TMA does not contain ‘services’ and thus, could arguably be said to be restrictive, a careful read of the definition of a ‘trademark’ under the TMA reveals that there is nothing in the TMA, particularly section 67 of the TMA providing a restrictive definition for a ‘mark’. The definition of a ‘mark’ under the TMA is quite broad and can arguably accommodate a ‘domain name.’ Section 67 TMA defines a ‘mark’ to include; ‘a device, brand, heading, label, ticket, name, signature, word, letter, numeral, or any combination thereof .’ Flowing from this, it can thus be said that a ‘domain name,’ when used in relation to any goods, and same being identical with or so nearly resembling such goods, as to likely deceive or cause confusion, in the course of trade can be said to be an infringement of a registered mark. (Section 5(2) TMA).

Cybersquatting: An infringement of Trademark?
The requirements for an action hinged on trademark infringement in Nigeria, as provided for in section 5(2) TMA are as follows: (x) The trademark must have been used by a person who is neither a proprietor nor has obtained permission to use same; (y) The mark used must have been identical with the trademark or so nearly resembling it; (z) The mark used must be likely to deceive or cause confusion in the course of trade and in relation to any goods or services in respect of which it is registered; and (zz) The mark must have b een used as a trademark or used upon the goods or services in the course of trade.
The first limb of the definition of cybersquatting under the Act, prohibits the registration of domain names that are, “similar, identical, or confusingly similar to an existing trademark registered with the appropriate government agency at the time of the domain name registration.” Therefore, a clear link between cybersquatting and trademark infringement has been created, thereby reducing the need to accommodate cybersquatting within the framework of section 5 (2) of the TMA which some have argued, cannot be appropriately expounded to accommodate cybersquatting actions.

A Welcome Development The Act provides a legal framework for the commission of various internet related activities including cybersquatting.

By virtue of Section 25(1) of the Act, the act of cybersquatting is punishable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of not more than 2 years or a fine of not more than N5,000,000 or to both fine and imprisonment. In addition, Section 25 (3) of the Act empowers the Federal High Court to make an order directing the offender to relinquish such registered name, mark, trademark, domain name, or other word or phrase to the rightful owner. It is important to note that the Act does not prohibit cybersquatting solely where the domain name is registered due to trademark infringement.
Interestingly, the Act also defines cybersquatting to include the acquisition of a domain name which consists of the personal name of a person.

Conclusion
In précis, whilst some have argued that with the introduction of the Act, the only remedy to cybersquatting in Nigeria is through the provisions of the Act, it may also be rightly argued that the existing TMA can also accommodate actions arising from domain name disputes and cybersquatting, where the domain name is a registered trademark. However, the penalties under the Act are more stringent than the civil remedies which would be available under the
TMA. Consequently, the Act may become the more preferable legal remedy for cases where cybersquatting and trademarks intersect.

What’s the link between trademark claims and domains?

Say you created an amazing gadget and gave it a unique, memorable name. Like Gadgmo Pro. You wouldn’t want anybody else to be able to use that name, right? So you’d trademark it. This is how the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office defines a trademark:

“A trademark is generally a word, phrase, symbol, or design, or a combination thereof, that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods of one party from those of others.”

Once you’re awarded your trademark, you can pack it off to live in a centralized database of verified trademarks called The Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). It helps you protect your trademark online. It’s like a boardinghouse for trademarked words and phrases, with a vigilant landlord who grills wannabe trademark usurpers. It’s cool. Anyway…

What does all this have to do with domains?

You obviously want consumers to find your amazing gadget online, which is where just about everybody finds just about everything nowadays, so you’ll use your trademarked name in your website address (aka your domain name). It’s yours. You can do that. But you don’t want anybody else to register a domain name that includes your trademarked word or phrase.

In the past, it was fairly easy to protect your brand online because naming options were limited to a handful of domain extensions, such as .com. That’s changing with the continuing rollout of hundreds of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) — many of which have open registration policies. You might already have registered gadgmopro.com, gadgmopro.net and gadgmopro.biz, but what’s stopping someone else from registering gadgmopro.solutions or gadgmopro.guru or gadgmopro.company?

Well, nothing actually. But The Trademark Clearinghouse puts them (the registrant) on notice: They have to acknowledge the trademark before they can register the domain. If they move forward, the TMCH will notify you (the trademark holder on file) that someone else has registered a domain name that includes your trademarked name.

Warning. Warning. Possible trademark infringement

Here’s how it works: Mandated by ICANN for all new gTLDs, the Trademark Claims service warns trademark holders AND domain name registrants (people who register domain names) of possible trademark infringements. First, the service sends a potential domain name registrant a warning notice when they attempt to register a domain name that matches a trademarked word or phrase in the TMCH. Then, if the registrant continues to register the domain name after receiving and accepting the notice, the service sends a notification of the registration to the trademark holder.

As реr ICANN ruleѕ, the registrar (like GoDaddy) must notify customers who pre-registered or registered a domain with a trademark claim against it. The customer must acknowlеdgе the claim аgainst their domain in order for us to proceed with the registration of the domain at the registry. The way we notify customers about trademark claims, and how they acknowledge them, depends on whether they registered during Pre-Registration, Early Access or General Availability.

If a GoDaddy customer рre-registered a domain and іt has a claim against it, we’ll send them an advance email informing them of the claim and a final email the day they can acknowledge the claim. Our customers have three options:

1. Acknоwlеdge the claim, sо we can submit the regiѕtrаtion in a timely manner. This increases the customer’s odds of being awarded the domain.

2. Do nothing. The domain rеgіstratiоn will auto-submit after the claim’s period ends (which generally is 90 days into General Availability, but can vary by domain extension).

3. Cancel the domain registration.

Trademark claims during Earlу Αccess and Gеnеral Avaіlаbility

If the customer registers the dоmаin aftеr thе opening of a phase (either Early Access or General Availability), they must acknowledge any claim(s) against the domain in order to purchase the domain. We make this clear and easy in our checkout process.

What’s next?

If someone acknowledges that there’s a potential trademark on a domain name and registers it anyway, two things could happen. You, the trademark holder, could do nothing and they can build their website and their business and enjoy their new domain name. Or, you could ask them to relinquish the domain name. If they don’t, you could take legal action on your own.

Either way, the place that sold you the domain name is no longer a part of the process. With the help of The Trademark Clearinghouse, we notifed both parties about the domain name registration and potential trademark infringement.
