Tesla has postponed the reveal of its redesigned second-generation Roadster to Oct. 15 from Oct. 1 because of severe weather forecast for the outdoor event in Waco, Texas.
Tesla said in a post on X that it had tracked the weather with local meteorologists but decided to reschedule because severe conditions were predicted and the event could only be held outdoors.
“We’ve been tracking the weather closely with local meteorologists, but given the severe conditions predicted & because this event can only be held outdoors, we’ve made the difficult decision to reschedule,” the company wrote.
The reveal has already been delayed multiple times. Elon Musk had previously pushed the event back for months and at one point considered holding it on April 1 this year.
At Tesla’s 2025 annual meeting, Musk said an April Fools’ Day event would give him “some deniability” if it slipped again. “Like, I could say I was just kidding,” he said.
Tesla first unveiled the second-generation Roadster concept in 2017 at the same event where it introduced the Semi truck. The vehicle was billed as the company’s first supercar designed from the ground up, unlike the original Roadster, which was based largely on the Lotus Elise.
Tesla took $50,000 deposits from prospective buyers for the car, which had an estimated base price of about $200,000. Some customers paid $250,000 to reserve one of 1,000 Founders Series versions.
Tesla has been working on integrating cold gas thrusters from SpaceX that are meant to give the Roadster some flying capability. Musk later directed Tesla’s team to redesign the vehicle around the SpaceX thruster concept.
The delays have drawn criticism from some reservation holders. OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman wrote on X last year that “7.5 years has felt like a long time to wait” for his Roadster, though Musk said Altman had received a refund.
Musk has said he expects it will take a year or more after the reveal before the new Roadster enters production.
