Apple Watch Series 12 to bring ceramic case back, Gurman says

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Apple plans to unveil the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 on Sept. 9, with no major design changes expected for either model.

Gurman said the Series 12 is expected to bring back a ceramic case option, and Apple has tested both white and dark gray versions.

He said the new watches are more likely to focus on routine upgrades, including faster performance and improved health and fitness tracking, rather than adding a major external redesign.

The Series 12 and Ultra 4 are expected to move beyond the S10 chip used in the Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2 and Ultra 3, which would deliver the first Apple Watch performance gains in several years.

Gurman said one feature in testing would let the Apple Watch heart-rate sensor collect data continuously throughout the day.

He also said Apple is revamping its Health and Fitness apps to show more wellness metrics, in a format he described as similar to apps from Whoop and Oura.

Gurman did not back a separate rumor that the Series 12 would use a watch band with an embedded health sensor. An Apple Watch SE 4 is not expected to launch this year, Gurman said.

He added that a larger Apple Watch redesign is in development but is unlikely to arrive for another year or two.

Gurman has also said Apple is continuing work on a blood sugar detection feature for the Apple Watch, with a target release by 2030.
