ByteDance has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Motion Picture Association to set a framework for protecting Hollywood copyrights across the company’s AI models.
The MPA said the agreement covers all ByteDance AI models, including those used on TikTok, TikTok USDS Joint Venture, CapCut and Dreamina.
The trade group said the deal follows months of talks over alleged copyright violations by ByteDance’s AI systems. The MPA sent a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance in February accusing the company of using copyrighted material without permission.
ByteDance later pledged to strengthen safeguards against unauthorized use of intellectual property and likeness. Seedance 2.0’s global rollout was later reportedly suspended.
The MPA, whose members include Disney, Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, said the agreement represents “significant cooperation” between the two organizations.
The group also said ByteDance’s recent releases, Seedream 5.0 Pro and Seedance 2.5, reflect continued advances in intellectual property protections.
MPA Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin said the association had constructive engagement with ByteDance and that the company had implemented “meaningful guardrails” for its AI models.
Hollywood studios are also pursuing a lawsuit against Midjourney, accusing the image generation company of copyright infringement.
