Google transforms Search into a comprehensive AI homework assistant

Google is transforming its Search and AI Mode into a comprehensive platform for homework assistance, a change announced on August 19, 2026. The newly integrated features allow users to upload images of assignments and study guides, receiving detailed support through Google’s Lens and AI Overview tools.

The initiative includes collaborations with educational organizations such as The Princeton Review, Careers360, PhysicsWallah, and Akira Enem to aid students studying for standardized tests. Google stated that users can create practice quizzes and utilize visuals to comprehend complex topics, similar to the interactive visuals introduced with the Gemini model last year.

Additionally, students can connect to the Gemini Notebook for a more personalized approach to homework help. This integration allows Search to utilize AI Mode conversations, files, and other data to generate customized study documents tailored to each user’s needs.

In response to safety concerns, Google has been gradually adapting its Search features for minor users. After a review by Common Sense Media deemed Google’s AI-powered Search risky for minors, the company opened access to its Gemini features through its Classroom app. This allows students to seek chatbot assistance for assignments and generate educational resources.

Despite the criticisms, Google defended its AI Search capabilities, claiming they provide valuable learning opportunities for children and teenagers. Google stated that the study conducted by Common Sense Media used a limited set of queries that do not accurately reflect typical Search usage.

Further enhancing its educational offerings, Google is also introducing a centralized student hub within the Gemini platform. This hub will help manage study resources, sync assignment deadlines, and send notifications directly to Google Calendar. Upcoming features will include visualizations such as graphs and charts in lesson plans and access to Google’s Deep Research mode during Gemini Live voice chat.

As of August 19, 2026, U.S. college students can obtain a free year of Google AI Pro or discounted bundles of Google subscriptions, including Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium. Students outside the U.S. will also receive 12 months of Google AI Plus at no cost, as part of Google’s efforts to enhance educational support through its AI tools.
