Google will begin phasing out Google Assistant on Android phones from September 4, according to emails sent to users. Gemini will replace it as the default assistant on supported devices.
The transition will roll out over several weeks rather than reaching every device at once. After the update is applied, users will no longer be able to return to Google Assistant on their phone, tablet or compatible paired devices.
Common shortcuts will also be redirected to Gemini. Saying “Hey Google” or holding the power button on an eligible Android device will launch Gemini instead of Google Assistant.
The change will extend to supported accessories. Users who select Gemini as their mobile assistant will also receive the Gemini experience on compatible Wear OS watches, headphones and earbuds.
Google has added a notice to its Assistant support pages explaining that Gemini is replacing Assistant on most mobile devices. The company says Gemini can perform familiar commands while supporting more natural conversations.
The wider migration covers Android phones, tablets, cars, watches, televisions and other products. Google has been expanding Gemini’s capabilities while gradually withdrawing features tied to Assistant.
Devices that do not meet Gemini’s minimum requirements, along with users in unsupported regions, may retain access to Google Assistant until the broader phaseout is completed.
