Digital camera shipments rise in 2025 as Fujifilm surpasses Nikon

The global shipment numbers for digital cameras in 2025 indicate a significant recovery in the industry, with Canon leading the market with 4.5 million units sold, an increase of approximately one million units from the previous year. Sony maintained its second position with 2.42 million shipments, reflecting a smaller increase compared to Canon. The data, compiled by Nikkei Inc, is regarded as a reliable source for tracking digital camera market share, offering insights into brand performance and industry trends.

Fujifilm experienced remarkable growth, more than doubling its shipments from 430,000 units in 2023 to 1.16 million in 2025. This surge allowed Fujifilm to leapfrog Nikon, which shipped 880,000 units in 2025, down from 960,000 the previous year. Panasonic also saw an increase in shipments, moving up to 430,000 units in 2025 from 280,000 in 2024, while Ricoh Imaging shipped 210,000 units, significantly up from 70,000 in 2024.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in Japan noted that the camera production sector is showing signs of recovery following previous declines attributed to competition from smartphones and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Camera and Imaging Products Association (CIPA) corroborated these findings, indicating a positive trajectory for the camera industry.

The rankings for digital camera shipments in 2025 reflect this growth: Canon tops the list with 4.5 million units, followed by Sony with 2.42 million, and Fujifilm with 1.16 million. Nikon follows in fourth place with 880,000 units, while Panasonic and Ricoh Imaging complete the list with 430,000 and 210,000 units, respectively. The previous year’s rankings show a consistent rise in Canon and Fujifilm’s performance, while Nikon’s decline signals a shift in the competitive landscape.

Despite the positive growth, the data only reflects shipment numbers and not revenue, suggesting that the financial standings of these brands may differ based on their product offerings. Canon’s diversified portfolio across various camera types contributes to its top position, while Fujifilm’s appeal lies in its retro-styled products, capturing consumer interest. As the market evolves, the upcoming year may reveal further shifts as brands adapt to changing consumer preferences and technological advancements.
