Apple plans iPhone-to-Windows clipboard sync

Apple plans to bring cross-device clipboard sharing to iPhones and Windows PCs, allowing users to copy content on one device and paste it on the other.

MacRumors reported that Apple confirmed the project as part of its response to the European Union’s interoperability requirements. Microsoft requested the capability, arguing that Windows users should have access to the same type of clipboard syncing Apple already provides between iPhones, iPads and Macs through Universal Clipboard.

Android users have had similar functionality for years through Microsoft’s Phone Link app and SwiftKey keyboard, both of which can synchronize clipboard content with Windows.

Apple’s proposed system will allow developers to create an extension that shares clipboard data with paired accessories, including Windows computers. When a user copies content on an iPhone, iOS will alert the extension, which can transfer the data securely through the Accessory Transport Extension framework.

Microsoft initially requested continuous access to the iPhone clipboard. Apple said it needed to assess whether such access was technically possible without compromising the security and integrity of iOS before deciding to move forward.

Apple described the work as a major engineering project and said it is not expected to be completed until fall 2027. Microsoft will also need to use AccessorySetupKit to obtain permission for each Windows PC connected to an iPhone.

The feature could initially remain limited to the European Union because it is being developed through Apple’s EU interoperability process.
